What to do first
- If anyone is hurt, or vehicles are blocking live lanes, call 911 first.
- Move to a safe place away from traffic and turn on your hazard lights.
- Take photos of the vehicles, the scene and any damage.
- Call your insurer if you plan to make a claim. Some policies cover towing.
- Then call dispatch with your location, vehicle and where you want it taken.
You choose who tows your vehicle
Unless police or a government authority directs the tow, the tow is your choice. Under Alberta’s regulation, a towing operator needs your consent and must give you a written estimate before towing begins. You also decide where the vehicle goes: your home, your mechanic, a dealer or your insurer’s preferred shop.
